Viscous adhesives hold their shape after dispensing. That property is exactly what makes them useful for product assembly, bookbinding, and packaging operations where the adhesive needs to stay put rather than spread. The tradeoff is that they require more process control than lower-viscosity materials.
Temperature and shear rate both affect how these adhesives flow. Most are thixotropic, meaning they thin under mechanical pressure during pumping and recover their body once applied. That behaviour is a feature, not a flaw. Managing it correctly is what separates clean, consistent output from repeated line stoppages.
Temperature Control Comes First
Heat reduces viscosity. For most viscous adhesives, maintaining the right material temperature at the point of application is the most direct way to ensure consistent flow and reduce pump strain. Heated hoses and temperature-controlled reservoirs help maintain that consistency across a full shift and across seasons.
Staying within the supplier’s recommended temperature window is critical. Overheating a hot melt adhesive causes thermal degradation, charring, and loss of bond strength. Running too cold increases viscosity beyond what your equipment is rated for and leads to pressure faults and uneven output.

Match Your Equipment to Your Adhesive
Dispensing equipment needs to suit the viscosity range of the adhesive running through it. Mismatches are a frequent source of production problems.
- Nozzle clogging happens when orifice size is too small for the material’s viscosity at application temperature.
- Pump pressure faults occur when viscosity exceeds the pump’s rated range, accelerating wear and causing inconsistent output.
- Stringing and tailing are typically a sign that viscosity is too high at the nozzle or that nozzle temperature is inconsistent.
Extrusion guns and slot dies are well suited to viscous adhesives and are standard in product assembly and general packaging operations. If equipment issues are recurring, the problem is often a viscosity-to-equipment mismatch rather than a fault with the adhesive itself.
When the Formulation Needs to Change
If your adhesive is consistently outside the workable range for your equipment, process adjustments alone will not solve it. That is when formulation becomes the right conversation.
